Mini Sport Garage: MG Race Car is being upgraded.
Late last week we a had a rally car arrive at Mini Sport. Stephen Irvine visited us with his MG ZR 160 with the intention of upgrading the safety and handling of his car. This is a perfect job for our fully qualified Rover Approved Technician.
The list of things to do included Camber plates on the rear accompanied by some Brown and Gammon adjustable Top Mounts at the front. Safety-wise there was a Fire Extinguisher System, a new Bucket Seat and a Quick release steering wheel system that will be accompanied by a OMP Steering Wheel.
The first thing our mechanic did was fit the Fire Extinguisher system, whilst waiting for the Top Mounts to arrive. Installing the Fire Extinguisher isn’t as easy as you would first think as our mechanic had to route the tubing and make sure the Extinguisher will spray on the areas that are most likely to start a fire.
You can see the Fire Extinguisher in place here →and below you can also see one of the top mounts fitted and a fire extinguisher spray point next to it.
Our experienced and skilled mechanic quickly moved on to fitting the Top Mounts.. only to find a problem! For the Top Mounts to fit, Mr Irvine needed to upgrade his struts as the Top Mounts were not engineered to fit standard suspension. Mr Irvine opted to fit some GAZ Gold Shock Absorbers both back and front.
The fully adjustable shocks are part of a premium range of suspension units designed specifically for tarmac motorsport so should do just what Steve Irvine wants as he competes on tarmac in Sprints and Hill Climbs.
Steve who is backed both by ourselves and Burnley based GBB, debuted his new car on the opening round of the 2011 MGCC Luffield MG Car Club Northern Championship in July, a championship he won in 2009 before undergoing surgery on wear and tear damage to his back sustained previously, during his Army service. Steve thought his racing days were behind him and sold his Championship winning car but he is now back to quench his need for speed.
It is now just over half way through the season now and Steve is lying in a close 6th place in class and 11th overall, a good, steady return to the Championship. We wish him all the best for the rest of the season.
