Mini Seven Race Report – Brands Hatch
Well it’s been a manic start to the season , and we a currently at race 4 of 8 in a 6 week period so sorry for the delay in race reports…
The Brands Hatch Mini Festival was a blustery event, but the showers and storm force winds not putting off the die hard mini fanatics that make any Mini event that extra bit special .
Qualifying was very very wet and after problems at Castle Combe I was keen to make some progress, and after what felt like a very steady and cautious session I was very pleased to have earned 4th and 6th spots respectively for the two races that weekend.
Race one couldn’t come quickly enough, and the sun decided to make an appearance which made things very different to the morning.
I made a terrible start, hampered by an engine map that made me bog down at low revs, so by the second corner I was down to eight, but importantly, keeping up with the pack. With my misfire problem returning all I could do was try and hold on to my position, which proved to be fortuitous as with a couple of retirements in front, I was able to bring the car home for 6th position, pleasing all things considered.
After some alterations to trigger wheel alignment and engine map I was more fired up for race 2, and as the lights went green I made a fantastic start , driving through to 4th by the second corner. Typical close racing ( and a little rubbing! ) saw me drop to 8th but again holding my own in terms of pace . With 2 more retirements in front I was back to 6th and in a pack of 3 cars fighting for 4 position when something went very wrong with the steering!
Now common sense should have prevailed at this point and I should have retired , but with an empty rear view mirror I decided to carry on with extreme caution . It’s not that I didn’t have steering , just a lot of play in the steering wheel before any movement occurred . Calculated decisions proved to be the key in bringing the car home to another 6th position finish , not bad with all things considered!
After this weekend it was fair to say that my confidence has returned and with a position of 4th in the championship things seem to be improving.
