The Cheviot Stages Rally on the 28th October promises to be a great event for any fan of the Mini WRC. Comprising both The Mini Sport Cup and the Protyre Championship, it’ll be the penultimate round for the former, whilst for the latter, it is the final rally of the season and a championship decider. We will be there, of course, and are very much looking forward to a nail-biting day of racing.

Mini WRC Action At The Cheviot Stages Rally

Organised by the Whickham & District Motor Club and Hadrian Motor Sports Club, the Cheviot event has been providing thrilling racing in the area for more than 30 years.

Taking place close to the village of Otterburn, in Northumberland, the rally course comprises of 60 miles of asphalt across Otterburn Training Area, an Army firing range that trains around 30,000 military personnel every year.

Located on the north side of the main A68 England-Scotland trunk road, the rallying area is known locally as ‘The Airstrips’. The stages of the event take the form of a number of loops that are based around the Airstrips service area, with each stage linked by road sections on public and private roads.

The range itself comprises almost a quarter of Northumberland’s National Park and the name of the event is taken from The Cheviot, which at 815 metres is the highest point in the Park. On a clear day, walkers can see as far as the Lake District in North West England, whilst some have claimed that they can see Edinburgh – a picturesque trip if anyone (somehow) doesn’t fancy a drive!

The day will see nine events take place in total, with Mini WRC in action in the HRCR Mintex ‘Old Stager’ Historic Stage Rally Championship (incorporating the Mini Sport Cup and the Mini Sport Junior Cup) – and the final stage of the Protyre MSA Asphalt Championship. This is a particularly important event for us to mention, as Mini Sport’s own Daniel Harper is going into this final event joint-second on the Championship leaderboard, with his title hopes very much alive. Good luck to Daniel and his co-driver Chris Campbell (who is also in second place in the co-drivers Championship) in their John Cooper Works Mini WRC!
